PROTECTING PEOPLE IN THE WORKPLACE & MARKETPLACE

PROTECTING PEOPLE IN THE  MARKETPLACE | NEARLY $2M AWARDED IN 2019

Assuring fairness for all in the justice system, regardless of income or circumstance, is central to our democracy. Often during their most challenging times, District residents living in poverty are denied their rights as employees, consumers and patients due to power imbalances and various bureaucracies in court.

Equitable access to legal protection is always important but is especially vital for those whose health or livelihood are on the line. That’s where civil legal aid comes in.

Safeguarding and upholding the laws intended to protect people’s jobs, health, and finances strengthen our communities and economy. The work we fund to ensure workers’ rights are defended on the job, consumers are shielded from unlawful practices, and people with disabilities are given access to services has protected hundreds of District residents in the workplace and marketplace.

The DC Bar Foundation’s focus area of Protecting People in the Marketplace includes:

  • Employment. Helping DC residents to address wage theft, discrimination and wrongful termination in the workplace.

  • Health & Disability. Preserving and increasing access to healthcare for low-income DC residents.

  • Consumer. Obtaining relief for DC residents experiencing predatory or illegal loan practices.
