Our COVID-19 response grants are helping DC’s legal aid organizations navigate hardships incurred from COVID-19 so they can provide uninterrupted life-saving legal support to our DC neighbors in need. Over the next few months, we will highlight several of our COVID-19 Response grant recipients. This month, we feature The DC Affordable Law Firm. Read on to learn about the work they are doing to support their clients through this crisis, and how our funding helps.
The DC Affordable Law Firm is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide high quality, affordable legal services to DC Residents with unmet legal needs who do not qualify for free legal aid and are unable to pay prevailing legal rates. Their clients’ income levels most typically fall between 200% and 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (between $52,000 and $104,000 per year for a family of 4), and pay reduced rates for The DC Affordable Law Firm’s services.
The DC Affordable Law Firm will use our funds to provide family law legal assistance, specifically for African Americans and immigrant communities in Wards 5, 7, and 8. These funds will support them as they work on limiting child support modifications due to changes in employment, and custody issues due to the loss of a child's parent.
