The D.C. Bar Foundation was founded in 1977 by the District of Columbia Bar to provide lawyers and law firms with a vehicle for funding legal services for the underprivileged. A 501(c)(3) organization, the Foundation's board of directors is composed of leaders of the legal community. In 1985, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals established the Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) Program, creating a secondary source of funding for the D.C. Bar Foundation.
