The Jerrold Scoutt Prize recognizes outstanding legal services lawyers in our community and is one of the highest honors available solely to public interest lawyers in the District of Columbia. The law firm of Zuckert, Scoutt & Rasenberger LLP created theĀ Jerrold Scoutt Prize in 1993 with an endowment and annual gift to honor its founding partner, Jerrold Scoutt, a longtime champion of legal services for the poor. The DC Bar Foundation presents the Jerrold Scoutt Prize, along with a $2,500 stipend, annually at the Judicial Reception during the joint Judicial and Bar Conference.

HERZOG AND HANEY TO SHARE SCOUTT PRIZE

The DC Bar Foundation has selected Mark E. Herzog and Dorene Haney as co-recipients of the 2012 Jerrold Scoutt Prize.

Mark Herzog, Associate Director of the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program, has served with that organization since 1994. Mr. Herzog has trained and mentored countless lawyers and law students, and is a national authority on the provision of pro bono legal services to the poor. He has handled numerous matters himself and has helped knit together effective collaborations to address critical legal needs at their source, spearheading, among other matters, the creation of four resource centers at D.C. Superior Court, helping thousands of pro se litigants that come to court for consumer, tax sale, probate, and landlord-tenant issues. At the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program, Mr. Herzog supervises and oversees all litigation activities, many aspects of the program’s operations and service delivery systems, and coordinates closely with other stakeholders in the justice system. Mr. Herzog is a graduate of the University of Florida and The George Washington University Law School.

Dorene Haney has been a supervising attorney in the civil division of D.C. Law Students in Court since 1998. Through LSIC’s unique mission, Ms. Haney has helped train hundreds of law students in the delivery of legal services, while also herself representing scores of low income DC residents in eviction and consumer proceedings. Ms. Haney’s work has focused on Spanish-speaking and disabled low income DC residents. She actively mentors volunteer lawyers taking pro bono cases, and serves on court and bar committees that seek to enhance access to our judicial system for our city’s disadvantaged residents. Ms. Haney is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and Georgetown University Law Center.

The DC Bar Foundation will present the 2012 Jerrold Scoutt Prize to Mr. Herzog and Ms. Haney on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Judicial Reception during the joint Judicial and Bar Conference.
